Summary of ‘The Winner’

Luann Tyler is a 20 year old uneducated, unmarried single mother living in a trailer park in rural Georgia with a drug runner Duane Harvery.

Her life is tough as she’s struggling to make ends meet to provide for her daughter, Lisa.

Her life faces a gargantuan dilemma when a mysterious man named ‘Jackson’ appears with an implausible offer: he offers Luann a rags-to-riches deal, a guaranteed win in the next lottery of prize worth $ 100 million.

In exchange, she must leave her current life behind completely with no contact with anyone and flee the country, in other words, disappear forever.

At first, Luann holds onto her integrity and refuses the offer as the conditions of the deal are unsettling and eerie.

But she gets involved in a violent encounter with Duane’s colleagues in a drug trade in which Duane gets murdered.

Luann is falsely accused of his murder.

Now she has the only choice left which will help her get away from the long reach of the law and make her rich too hence she agrees to Jackson’s offer.

Just as promised, Luann wins the lottery and becomes a millionaire overnight. She flees the country and starts a new life abroad under a new identity.

But she is always looking over her shoulder for Jackson thinking he might come back to control her.

Ten years pass and Luann has built a peaceful life for herself and Lisa. But peace moves out of her life when she chooses to return to the United States where she is still wanted for murder.

She wants to confront the fear of Jackson that has held her life for years.

Her return catches the attention of a famous investigative journalist, Thomas Donovan who begins to look deeper into her lottery winning.

When Jackson learns of Luann’s return, he becomes enraged.

Luann’s violation of their agreement has made him furious and he fears that her presence would expose him. He begins to systematically kill every possible witness causing Luann and Lisa to go on the run again.

Luann meets a former FBI agent, Matthew Riggs who helps her set up a deal with the FBI in which Luann gets protection in exchange for giving information on Jackson.

As the search for Jackson goes on, Matthew and Luann begin to fall in love.

Jackson tries to eliminate her as a loose end but with the help of Riggs and her loyal friend Charlie, Luann fights to protect herself and her daughter from the evil that Jackson is.

The tension escalates into a game of cat and mouse leading to a final confrontation where Luann uses her resourcefulness, strength and wit to triumph over Jackson exposing Jackson’s crimes and reclaiming her life.

Review of ‘The Winner’

David Baldacci’s The Winner has all the ingredients to be called a thriller that is spicy.

On the contrary, I felt ‘The Winner’ to be more than a thriller; it’s a tale of survival, deception, resilience, redemption and the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

Once you get past a few pages and go deep in the story, ‘The Winner’ will make you want to read it more and more.

Baldacci’s writing is no-doubt gripping, the short chapters bring more ease to the reading and build the intrigue and Baldacci keeps the stakes high from start to finish.

The USP of ‘The Winner’ is the concept of a rigged lottery that is both fascinating and chilling and the ethical dilemmas faced by Luann add depth to the story.

The story was original and mostly unpredictable. Baldacci has put enough twists and turns in the story to baffle your mind. Just when you think you have something figured out, things move in the opposite direction.

However, the book isn’t without flaws.

Some readers may find the characters over the top, particularly Mr Jackson.. Yeah!! That’s the correct word.

When you go deep into his elaborate schemes and the power to rig the lottery, it actually makes you think that some plot elements seem implausible. Sometimes he appears overly dramatic too.

And if you get easily distracted then Baldacci’s long paragraphs (sometimes a page long) may hurt your entertainment. Also, Baldacci’s repetitive reminders of Luann’s beauty and strength will either make you fall in love with her or leave you slightly irritated.

But Baldacci’s skill to build up the tension and no compromise on the pacing outweighs these minor drawbacks.

‘The Winner’ has 4.14 stars on Goodreads from 52, 358 ratings whereas on Amazon it has 4.4 stars from 24,904 ratings.

Conclusion

While ‘The Winner’ often stretches beyond the borders of believability, its plot more than makes up for it.

Yes, sometimes the characters do feel over-the-top but Baldacci’s writing to arouse the question of ‘what will happen next to Luann’ makes ‘The Winner’, published in 1998, a page turner.

If you’re looking for a novel that keeps you guessing until the very end, then reading ‘The Winner’ is a gamble where winning is highly likely.
