What is Split Second by David Baldacci about?

Split Second by David Baldacci is a spine chilling thriller with a different innovative angle that intrigues you right from the start.

Sean King, once a seasoned secret service agent, saw his career burnt to ashes in an instant when a presidential candidate on his watch was assassinated.

Few years down the line, another agent, Michelle Maxwell sees a similar fate when the person she was incharge of protecting got kidnapped.

King’s and Maxwell’s seemingly unrelated failures intertwine when a strange murder happens forcing them to team up.

As they dig deeper they discover a brutal conspiracy having far-reaching impact, one that makes them suspect everyone including each other.

Baldacci’s genius writing shines in ‘Split Second’.

He makes the teaming up of two disgraced agents through a murder the USP of the novel in which he has carefully planted clever twists.

He has really outdone himself in Split Second, in which he has weaved the whole story around the title. No other book could justify its title more than ‘Split Second’.

Alright, that’s enough of the introduction about the novel, (Sorry ! If I got carried away). But let me take you directly to the summary of the plot.

Summary of David Baldacci’s Split Second

Sean King’s life was ruined in a fraction of a second.

King was a respected secret service agent who was assigned the task of protecting a presidential candidate Clyde Ritter.

But during a routine campaign stop, Sean looks away for a split second and Ritter loses his life when a mysterious man, later identified as Edgar Roy, steps out of the crowd and shoots him dead.

Although Sean catches the shooter Edgar Roy later but his failure to protect the candidate ends his career leaving him shrouded with shame.

Cut to 8 years later, Sean has moved on and is a practicing lawyer in Virginia but he is still traumatised by the events of that day which ruined his life.

Michelle Maxwell, a rising and shining secret service agent is assigned to protect a presidential candidate, John Bruno. Like Sean, her life takes a devastating turn when John Bruno gets abdicated under her watch.

The circumstances of both events are uncannily similar: a split second step away from the duty and the world collapses. Michelle is asked to take a leave from her position.

Filled with guilt and suspicion she finds all this not incidental.

Stimulated by a desperate need for answers, Michelle reaches out to Sean. Initially reluctant towards teaming up with Michelle because of his personal failure, Sean joins hands with Michelle when she finds an unsettling link between Bruno’s kidnapping and Ritter’s assassination.

What begins as an investigation into an upsetting link between their individual cases soon unravels the presence of a dangerous conspiracy.

Their unquenchable thirst for truth also reveals some shocking connections.

Soon evidence comes to the light suggesting that the two incidents involving Sean and Michelle were orchestrated by a shady network with connections to political power.

Sean and Michelle face a lot of hurdles in their obstacles, some proving to be highly perilous such as a murder in Sean’s office, threats from unknown enemies.

A pivotal moment in their investigation appears when a sinister connection is discovered to the mysterious Edgar Roy, yes, the same guy who Sean caught after Roy killed the presidential candidate.

Although Roy is in jail for Ritter’s assassination, his real role in the conspiracy as a pawn begins to surface which makes certain that Roy was never acting alone.

Progressing on the investigation, Sean and Michelle uncover a sinister motive behind the two attacks which is the manipulation of political outcomes by a secret group willing to eliminate throwing a wrench in their plan.

As the duo gets closer to the truth they face life-threatening situations from car chases to deadly ambushes, but their determination to uncover the truth grows stronger.

Also, the partnership between Sean and Michelle grows deeper as they learn to trust one another, their shared purpose and common failures growing their bond stronger.

In the thrilling climax of the novel, the mastermind of the conspiracy is revealed (no spoilers ). A betrayal strikes at the heart of their investigation and Sean and Michelle will have to outsmart their enemies in a race where every second counts.

Michelle and Sean expose the conspiracy bringing the culprits to justice in a nail biting confrontation thus preventing further political upheaval.

In the end, Sean and Michelle find an atonement for their guilt as well as a renewed sense of purpose.

Sean, who felt burdened by his failure, found that the right thing to do is facing your inner demons with courage.

Michelle, equally burdened by her guilt, finds strength in her alliance with Sean and a sense of purpose for fighting for what’s right.

Review of Split Second

Split Second is the first novel in David Baldacci’s King and Maxwell series setting a stage for a gripping partnership between two compelling characters traumatized by their past.

The novel is an amalgamation of the themes of political intrigue, suspense, action, redemption and trust.

Although Split Second has incredible strengths, it does have a few weaknesses that readers should consider before diving in.

Strengths

Vibrant characters - The protagonists Sean and Michelle are well crafted, multidimensional characters having relatable flaws. Their common disgraceful experience immediately relates you with them and you are drawn to their journey of redemption. Sean and Michelle’s dynamic partnership not only forms the backbone of the narrative which you enjoy a lot as reader.

Fast paced and thrilling plot - David Baldacci’s signature style is fast-paced plots masterfully woven with thrill and suspense and Baldacci didn’t disappoint a bit in Split Second. Right from the beginning, both the thrill and stakes are high with kidnappings, assassinations, and conspiracies just pacing the story forward. Baldacci really succeeds in keeping you on the toes with unexpected twists and rapid pacing of the plot.

Political Intrigue - Baldacci has done a lot of research for the novel and his experience of writing political thrillers makes Split Second above par. The backdrop of the Secret Service and political campaigns gives the novel a relatable and authentic setting. Baldacci’s insider knowledge of Washington DC and its power dynamics add depth to the story making it engaging for fans of political thrillers.

Compelling beginning - Like I said earlier the start of the book is its USP. The protagonists distracting for a split second inviting disgrace to their careers and lives, forms the base of a new and well thought of plot. As a reader, you enjoy the groundwork laid in the plot setting a stage for promising next installments.

Weaknesses

Overly complex plot - While the plot is fast paced and thrilling and the twists and turns add a lot of excitement to it, in some pages of the novel, the plot looks overly convoluted. Large number of subplots and characters make it challenging for the readers to follow the main storyline. At a few instances, you may feel that the complexity has been forced just to create an extra impact which was unnecessary.

Engaging issues in the middle - Overall, Split Second is fast-paced that keeps you hooked but certain parts in the middle of the novel seem less engaging and interrupt the momentum of the story.

Lack of emotional depth - Sean and Michelle are very compelling characters and Baldacci has done a superb job in weaving the plot based on them but if you’re a fan of character driven thrillers then you will note that their emotional struggles haven’t been explored in greater depth. Sean and Michelle’s pasts were rich with the potential for character developments but Baldacci focuses more on the plot than their emotional journeys

Predictability of certain twists - Although there are several surprises in the novel, some twists in the plot seem predictable so if you’re a seasoned thriller reader then certain elements may feel less impactful and familiar.

So, if the question is if reading Split Second is worth my time then definitely ‘Yes’.

Fans of David Baldacci are certainly going to find it an intriguing read in which Baldacci doesn’t disappoint and this political thriller certainly meets your expectations.

Split Second has received 4.05 stars on Goodreads from 78,493 ratings and 4.2 stars from 35,012 ratings on Amazon.

Michelle teams up with Sean to uncover the truth, their dynamic partnership becomes one of the main features of the story which keeps getting stronger as the novel progresses further.

3. Joan Dillinger - Joan Dillinger is a popular lawyer and former love interest of Sean King. Her role in the novel is highly suspicious and ambiguous as it seems that she is somehow involved in the conspiracy surrounding the assassination and the kidnapping.
